Yarra River Protection
The Victorian Government has committed to protecting the Yarra River's amenity and significance by introducing legislation, stronger planning controls and a Trust (or similar entity) to ensure this valuable asset is protected for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.
1 July 2016 - Ministerial Advisory Committee releases discussion paper
The Yarra River Protection Ministerial Advisory Committee has released its discussion paper and is seeking feedback from the community on the key issues and opportunities for the river. Submissions close at 5pm on Friday 5 August 2016.

14 January 2016 - Interim controls for the Yarra River for the City of Yarra
Interim planning controls have been implemented to protect the Yarra River within the City of Yarra. The interim planning controls establish development and vegetation management expectations to guide appropriate development while permanent controls are progressed for protecting the whole of the Yarra River Corridor.

21 December 2015 - Strengthened Yarra River Protection planning policy introduced
The Minister for Planning has amended the State Planning Policy Framework (SPPF) strengthening the planning policy for the Yarra River. The amendment changes the SPPF by relocating an updated Clause 11.04-9 River corridors to create a new Clause 12.05 Rivers, and introduces a new Clause 12.05-2 Yarra River protection policy.

15 December 2015 - Yarra River Protection Ministerial Advisory Committee announced
The Minister for Planning and Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water announced a new Yarra River Protection Ministerial Advisory Committee to provide advice on the need and form of legislation and trust .

Yarra River Protection Ministerial Advisory Committee
In December 2015 the Minister for Planning and the then Minster for Environment, Climate Change and Water appointed the Yarra River Protection Ministerial Advisory Committee (Yarra MAC) to provide independent advice to Government on the key issues and opportunities for the river as well as improvements to the governance arrangements for its protection.
As part of its deliberations the Yarra MAC is seeking feedback from the community on the key issues and opportunities for the river. A Discussion Paper has been developed to generate discussion and promote debate on about how the Yarra River is managed and protected in the future. It outlines the key issues and proposes a new management model to protect the Yarra River.
The Committee would like to hear what you think about the ideas presented in this Discussion Paper and any other ideas that you may have.

Implementing Stronger Planning Controls - Richmond to Warrandyte
The government has committed to bringing a consistent and stronger approach to managing development along the Yarra River.
Work is underway aimed at strengthening state planning policy and delivering consistent local planning controls to protect the Yarra River between Richmond and Warrandyte - an area which is under immediate development pressure.
