This role involves processing referrals to the Minister for Planning for a decision on the need for an Environment Effects Statement (EES), as well as administration of the process when the Minister determines that an EES is required under the Environment Effects Act 1978.

The department is also responsible for managing the assessment and approvals processes for major transport projects under the Major Transport Projects Facilitation Act 2009.

Additionally, the department administers the Assessment Bilateral Agreement between the Commonwealth and the State under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
