Local and State governments work together to protect Victoria's precious heritage.

These resources will help explain the role of local government in protecting heritage places and objects, and provide tools for local government staff to protect local heritage.


  • Heritage Overlays

    Heritage overlays are part of local council planning schemes and assist in protecting the heritage of a municipality.

  • Heritage Overlay Guidelines

    These Guidelines will assist local government planners, heritage advisors and councillors in the assessment of planning permit applications under the Heritage Overlay.

  • Local Heritage Toolkit

    This toolkit brings together 5 documents - a range of strategic, statutory tools and non-statutory actions to help deliver good decisions, engender community support and build capacity for local heritage management.

  • Heritage advisors

    The Heritage Advisors program provides heritage advice to local councils and their local communities. Find a heritage advisor in your area.

  • Heritage training

    The Heritage Training resource will help inform local council staff and councillors about heritage.

  • Heritagechat

    Heritagechat is a Yahoo! chat group for heritage professionals.

  • Municipal Heritage Strategies

    This document has been prepared to help a Council to prepare a Heritage Strategy for its municipality.
